10 college football QBs who are incredibly fast heading into Week 4 ft. Arch Manning
Arch Manning surprised more than a few people in Week 3. The much-hyped Texas quarterback and member of the Manning dynasty had a great game passing. But his 67-yard run was the surprise. After all, uncles Peyton and Eli were about as mobile as a loaded-down 18-wheel truck. Arch is speedy, but he's not the only one — here is a list of 10 speedy college QBs.
10 college football QBs who can run
1. Bryson Daily, Army
You can't be a non-runner and play QB at Army. Their option-based offense demands a mobile QB, and Daily is one. The 6-foot senior rushed for 901 yards and seven touchdowns last year and has 195 rushing yards and two more TDs this season (in just two games).
2. John Mateer, Washington State
Washington State usually features drop-back passers (Cam Ward was their QB1 in 2023). But this 6-foot-1 sophomore has speed to burn. Mateer has 314 rushing yards and four TDs on the ground in just three games. Mateer has passed the ball well, but the ground attack is even more impressive.
3. Byrum Brown, South Florida
The 6-foot-3 sophomore has serious dual-threat ability. A year ago, he passed for 3,292 yards and 26 scores while rushing for another 809 yards and 11 TDs. He's doing the same type of work in 2024, with 254 rushing yards and two TDs on the ground already.
4. Matthew Sluka, UNLV
Sluka is a grad transfer from FCS Holy Cross, where he ran for 3,583 yards. He's bringing a dual-threat game to the Mountain West, with 253 rushing yards in just three games for the Rebels. Sluka was big in the upset of Kansas, rushing for 124 yards.
5. Taylen Green, Arkansas
A transfer from Boise State, Green has followed up KJ Jefferson by being an even more effective runner. Three games into 2024, Green has 245 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. By comparison, Jefferson had 447 yards and two TDs rushing in all of 2023.
6. Blake Horvath, Navy
See comments on Army above. In Navy's offense, the QB is more likely to run than pass. Last year, Horvath had 37 carries and 12 pass attempts. In 2024, the junior has 155 yards rushing and three touchdowns in just two games played.
7. Devon Dampier, New Mexico
A season ago, Dampier was a talented freshman backup — he arguably should have been a starter. This year, under new coach Bronco Mendenhall, he is the starter. The 6-foot speedster has 195 yards rushing and three touchdowns already.
8. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt
Taking over at Vandy after transferring from New Mexico State, Pavia has legitimate dual-threat credentials. He has 195 rushing yards and two scores in the first three games of 2024. One thing to watch: Pavia has 52 carries between run plays and sacks, and he could wear down in the SEC.
9. Avery Johnson, Kansas State
Johnson's running game was verified by solid time in a bowl and off the bench last season. The then-frosh threw for 479 yards and five scores and ran for 296 more yards and seven TDs. So far, he's sharp as a starting sophomore in 2024. Johnson has 187 rushing yards and an impressive 6.7 yards per carry average.
10. Riley Leonard, Notre Dame
The Duke transfer is proven as a runner and passer. So far in 2024, Leonard has 179 yards rushing and four scores on the ground. Coach Marcus Freeman will likely give Leonard many more chances to run.
