3 SEC teams Tony Petitti can target for his Big Ten expansion in conference realignment era
There is going to be a lot of movement due to conference realignment, and there is the possibility of a shift in power with Big Ten expansion. While the SEC has reigned supreme as the top college football conference, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti could close the gap by weakening the SEC.
Let's take a look at some SEC teams that can be targeted as Big Ten expansion runs rampant.
SEC teams Tony Petitti can target in Big Ten expansion
Texas A&M Aggies
The Texas A&M Aggies would be an interesting team, as the SEC technically doesn't need them after landing the Texas Longhorns in conference realignment. However, this would be a great addition, as the Big Ten Conference has not reached the state of Texas yet. In fact, it is the only Power Four conference without a Texas team. Without one of the top hotbeds in the country, this could be a target in Big Ten expansion that makes a lot of sense.
Vanderbilt Commodores
The Vanderbilt Commodores are a team that makes a lot of sense for the Big Ten expansion to be targeting. The Commodores are not a great football or basketball program, but this will be taking a lower-level SEC school and getting into the market of the southeastern United States. The program is also one of the best in terms of college baseball, to make things better. However, Tony Petitti can help elevate the status of Vanderbilt with the Big Ten arrival if it chooses to leave the SEC.
South Carolina Gamecocks
The South Carolina Gamecocks are an interesting team to include in conference realignment. Having a stronger team in college football to compete with the other conferences would be intriguing. The Gamecocks feel like an afterthought in the Southeastern Conference, and they cannot compete for relevancy in college football specifically. With the College Football Playoff giving an automatic spot to the conference champion, it is more likely to happen in the Big Ten than the SEC. It would make sense for both sides to have a move of this magnitude.
