5 coaches on the verge of getting fired entering Week 2 of college football season ft. Billy Napier
It can get late early for college football coaches. Sure, we're only on Week 2, but there are plenty of college coaches who are in serious jeopardy of the unemployment line. For some of the coaches on this list, the question isn't what will happen, but rather when the axe will fall.
Here's a closer look at five college football coaches already on the verge of getting fired entering Week 2.
5 coaches on the verge of getting fired entering Week 2
#5. Shane Beamer, South Carolina
Beamer dodged a Week 1 bullet, as his South Carolina Gamecocks rallied in the fourth quarter to hold off Old Dominion 23-19. But Carolina was outgained in the game and new quarterback LaNorris Sellers had a poor showing. Beamer is just 21-18 at Carolina and if USC gets blasted by Kentucky this weekend, the heat will likely turn up a notch.
#4. PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Fleck is in his eighth season at Minnesota. Even with North Carolina QB Max Johnson out for the season, the Golden Gophers found a way to take a 19-17 home loss to the Tar Heels. Minnesota has to play USC, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan in league play. A second straight losing season might make the Gophers reconsider the program's future.
#3. Brent Pry, Virginia Tech
Brent Pry is in his third season and is just 10-15 at Tech. It's hard to sell the forward momentum of the program with a Week 1 loss to Vanderbilt. While the ACC isn't exceptionally strong, the Hokies will play Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech among others. Another losing season might be enough to seal Pry's fate.
#2. Mike Norvell, Florida State
Norvell and FSU started 2023 with a 13-0 mark. But since then, not only are the Seminoles 0-3, but they were embarrassed twice. First, a 63-3 loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl was humbling. But now, starting 2024 with back-to-back losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College has almost ended FSU's Playoff hopes already. Norvell's job security can't be brilliant right now.
#1. Billy Napier, Florida
Napier is in year three at Florida. His 11-15 record is a bad start. Getting drilled by Miami 41-17 to open the season was a step further. The Gators have a brutal schedule up ahead, facing Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU and Tennessee among others. Napier will need a miracle to either have a winning season or still be at Florida in 2025.
