5 players who got seriously injured in Week 3 of college football season ft. Tyler Van Dyke

College football's Week 3 was an interesting mix of big games and big plays. But some players would already rather forget Week 3. A handful of teams will be scrambling because of significant injuries.

Here are five college football standouts who were seriously injured during Week 3 action.

5. Quinton Cooley, Liberty RB

A standout running back for Liberty, Cooley was playing well in Week 3 with six rushes for 45 yards when he sustained a leg injury. No certain statements have been made yet, but Liberty coach Jamey Caldwell acknowledged that the injury did not look good. Cooley rushed for 1,401 yards and 16 touchdowns last year, so his loss could be massive.

4. Trey Cummings, Navy OL

The senior starter had worked his way into a larger role for Navy. But with a leg injury sustained during Saturday's game, Cummings is apparently out for the season. He can redshirt and return for the 2025 season, but that's not much consolation for the agile lineman who was thriving in Navy's run-heavy system.

3. Quinn Ewers, Texas QB

By far the most famous player on this list, Ewers also had perhaps the least serious injury. Pulled from Texas's blowout win over UTSA due to an abdominal strain, he's expected to sit next week vs. Louisiana-Monroe. If Arch Manning continues to shine for the Horns, Ewers could end up as the Wally Pipp to Manning's Lou Gehrig.

2. Tate Ratledge, Georgia OL

The massive senior guard has garnered All-SEC and All-American honors. He came out of Georgia's narrow win over Kentucky with knee and ankle injuries. Ratledge's injuries were serious enough that he resurfaced later in the game on the Georgia sideline in street clothes. No official word was given, but the injury seemed likely to be season-ending or close to it.

1. Tyler Van Dyke, Wisconsin QB

A three-year starter at Miami, Van Dyke transferred to Wisconsin and was at the helm of the Badger offense. That ended when Alabama inflicted a lower leg injury which seemed likely to be season-ending. Van Dyke had to leave the field on a cart, and while it's still early for official word, he looks unlikely to return to action soon.

Van Dyke already redshirted in the 2020 season, so absent an NCAA waiver, he may not be able to redshirt again and return to continue his college career.
