5 teams destined to fail in 2024 college football season ft. Florida Gators
Preseason is the time for hope in college football circles. Everybody looks healthy and talented and ready to carve through college football. That said, a few programs have over-inflated egos right now. Some schools might look fine now, but will swiftly take a step back when the games start. Here are five teams that will likely end up having a tough 2024 college football season.
5 teams destined to fail in 2024 college football season
#1.Florida Gators
After an 11-14 start in his first two seasons in Gainesville, things aren't especially looking up for coach Billy Napier and the Gators. UF has one of the nation's toughest schedules. With non-conference matchups with Miami, Florida State and UCF, Florida left itself no margin for error in league play.
Unfortunately, Florida also has a brutal SEC slate. The Gators added a road game at Texas and also face LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennesse and a Kentucky team that has won the last three matchups. UF should be thrilled if they could reach 6-6, which is hardly normal expectations for a Florida college football season.
#2. Washington Huskies
A year ago, Washington reached the national title game. They certainly won't do it again this year. They lost coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama and have to replace almost all of their starters, particularly on offense, where they actually will likely start an entirely new set of 11 players.
Washington also has to play a Big Ten schedule that includes Michigan, USC, Penn State, Oregon and a road game at Iowa. After a 14-1 season a year ago, 7 wins would be a solid campain in 2024 for the Huskies.
#3. Miami Hurricanes
It's not that Miami won't be decent-- they will. It's not like the ACC is a juggernaut. Louisville reached the league championship a year ago, after all. But Mario Cristobal has people talking about an ACC title and a Playoff spot. There's been nothing in his Miami tenure to date to suggest that comes to pass.
Cristobal is 12-13 and Miami and the Hurricanes have lost five games as a favorite in those two seasons. Yes, they lost a game in 2022 as a 25 1/2 point favorite (Middle Tennessee State) and one in 2023 as a 20 point favorite (Georgia Tech). New talent is nice, but it'll carry Miami to an 8-4 type season that ends up shy of the preseason hype.
#4. Colorado Buffaloes
Deion's team continues to be all about hype, but has provided very little production. Off a 4-8 season, the Buffaloes have a literally restocked roster. But this remains a college football team with major holes and philosophical concerns.
Yes, Colorado will pass the ball and put up points and play exciting football. But their MO doesn't work against decent teams. Any offense with a pulse will score on Colorado and the Buffaloes' one-sided attack will make it hard for them to preserve leads. It could be a rough season.
#5. Nebraska Huskers
Every year, there are rumbles of expectations from those who think the Huskers are back. After seven straight losing seasons, it's probably time to redefine what "back" means. Can Nebraksa have a winning season? Sure. Are they going to play a major bowl game? No, very probably not.
The Huskers have a true freshman QB running and offense that struggled to move the ball a season ago. They've got some brutal conference matchups in the Big Ten. It's hard to fathom them winning at Ohio State or USC, for instance. 7-5 would be progress. But is that enough to sell Nebraska fans? Stay tuned and see.
