5 teams that are strangely overrated in College Football Playoff rankings of Week 12
The College Football Playoff rankings came out ahead of Week 12 of the season and gave fans an indication of what the 12-team College Football Playoff would look like if the season ended today. However, the CFP rankings show some teams are arguably being a bit overvalued.
Here's a closer look at some teams and why they are being ranked higher than they should be.
5 teams overrated in Week 12 CFP rankings
#1. Penn State Nittany Lions
The Penn State Nittany Lions were ranked No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings and that just does not make much sense. The Nittany Lions are 8-1 but they are 1-1 against ranked teams this season, including the 20-13 home loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes two weeks ago.
Should they be in the College Football Playoff with how they have played? That is arguable but having them ahead of teams such as the BYU Cougars and Indiana Hoosiers does not.
#2. Miami Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes are a weird team to discuss as they were No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The team is 9-1 right now and has one of the top players in the entire country in quarterback Cam Ward. However, having the possible Heisman Trophy winner does not mean their schedule should be overlooked.
The Atlantic Coast Conference has not been too strong this season and the Hurricanes are third in the ACC behind the SMU Mustangs and another team discussed below.
The Hurricanes are a good team but they do not deserve to be top 10, especially after losing to an unranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets program on Saturday.
#3. Georgia Bulldogs
The Georgia Bulldogs are on the brink of the College Football Playoff as they are No. 12 but would miss out on the bracket as things stand. However, it seems like they are here on brand alone and their one dominant win over the Texas Longhorns.
The committee seems to be ignoring the team that has lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels this season and could have lost more. They did not look good at all against the Florida Gators or in the game against the Kentucky Wildcats, despite edging out wins in those two. Georgia should be closer to No. 15 as currently constituted.
#4. Kansas State Wildcats
The Kansas State Wildcats are 7-2 this season and are fourth in the Big 12 Conference standings. However, you wouldn't know that by the College Football Playoff rankings as they are No. 16. This is a program who were just upset on the road against the Houston Cougars on Saturday.
One can understand why they are not able to fall behind the Colorado Buffaloes, as they hold a head-to-head win, but it does not seem to be a good spot compared to the rest of the CFP rankings.
#5. Clemson Tigers
The Clemson Tigers are No. 20 in the College Football Playoff and this just feels crazy. They are sitting with a 7-2 record this season and have losses to the Louisville Cardinals and their putrid Week 0 performance against the Georgia Bulldogs. Clemson is on the outside of the CFP right now but being ahead of teams like the LSU Tigers and even the undefeated Army Black Knights does not make sense.
