7 overrated college football quarterbacks heading into Week 5 of 2024 season ft. DJ Uiagalelei
For some quarterbacks, the first four weeks of the college football season have been quite long. While some teams and passers are storing up highlights, some players would rather just reset the clock on the season. Here's a list of seven quarterbacks who have been overrated heading into Week 5 of the 2024 campaign.
7 overrated college football quarterbacks heading into Week 5
#7. Avery Johnson, Kansas State
A dual-threat standout, Johnson was expected to be an able replacement for Will Howard. While Johnson is completing 61.1% of his passes and has six touchdowns to three interceptions, he hasn't been sharp. His average of 6.5 yards per pass attempt demonstrated why Kansas State is 70th in the nation in yardage per game.
#6. Jackson Arnold, Oklahoma
Arnold, like several other players on this list, has been bad enough to already lose his starting job for Oklahoma. Arnold is a talented sophomore replacing transfer Dillon Gabriel, who headed to Oregon. Much like Johnson above, there are positive signs with Arnold. He's completed 59.8% of his throws with seven touchdowns to three interceptions.
But Arnold is averaging just 5.3 yards per passing attempt, that's almost two yards per attempt below the next-lowest total in the SEC. He also hasn't topped 174 yards in any game or 5.8 yards per attempt in any game. That's how Michael Hawkins Jr. has now taken the starting role.
#5. Davis Warren, Michigan
A former walk-on, Warren has also lost his starting job. He has completed 66.7% of his passes but has just two touchdowns to six interceptions in 72 passing attempts, which is one of the worst rates in the country, and Warren was handicapping the Michigan offense.
How bad has Warren been? Bad enough that he was replaced last week for the USC game with junior Alex Orji, who won the game despite passing for just 32 yards. That was an improvement over Warren.
#4. Cade McNamara, Iowa
McNamara had been a part-time starter at Michigan but transferred to Iowa before last season. He struggled then and is still struggling. McNamara has been incredibly pedestrian, averaging just 5.8 yards per pass attempt with two sub-100-yard passing games in four weeks. If McNamara hadn't rolled over FCS Illinois State in the opener, his numbers would be even worse.
#3. Jalon Daniels, Kansas
There were big expectations of the mobile junior quarterback for 2024. Instead, he's thrown seven interceptions in 96 passing attempts. Daniels is completing just 56.3% of his throws and averages just 6.5 yards per attempt. If not for his ground game, the Jayhawks would probably move on to another passer.
#2. Grayson McCall, NC State
A star at Coastal Carolina, McCall was a major prize of the transfer portal. He has underachieved with NC State. McCall has averaged just 6.3 yards per pass attempt. He has three touchdowns to two interceptions and has been generally outplayed by freshman CJ Bailey, who is now the quarterback.
#1. DJ Uiagalelei, Florida State
Another transfer portal standout, Uiagalelei struggled at Clemson but improved before he moved on to Oregon State. FSU then settled on Uiagalelei to replace Jordan Travis. The season has been nothing short of a debacle so far for the Seminoles and Uiagalelei has been at its center.
With just 6.7 yards per passing attempt and a meager two touchdowns to three interceptions, Uiagaleli has been a massive disappointment.
