"A guy could be a phenomenal player but he does not fit in locker room": Deion Sanders shares old school principles of dealing with transfer portal
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have taken full advantage of the transfer portal, rebuilding their team with a continuous flow of fresh talent. Sander understands the transfer portal's influence on modern college football, the program has witnessed remarkable transformations under his leadership.
Sanders, in an interview on "Thee Pregame Show," shared his perspective on navigating the portal, emphasizing more traditional values. While acknowledging the importance of bringing in top-tier talent, he stressed the necessity of selecting players who align with the team’s culture.
“A guy could be a phenomenal player but if he don't fit in the locker room, he don't fit in the environment, he don't fit in the way we do things, he don't want to hustle, he don't want to work, he just want to be given things, he don't want to be a team guy, he want to be a me guy, that don’t fit and that don’t work with me,” Sanders said.
He further elaborated on his philosophy saying:
"I'm old school, man. I'm old school. Our staff is old school. Everything around here breeds old-school principles. So you're not gonna have success attracting something that ain't you. And not spending the time to evaluate something that's so far dismissed from who you are, you ain't gonna work.
"And it's unfortunate for some kids that have chosen this environment, this situation, just for money or just because you feel like you could do this. You feel like you could do that.”
Sanders also addressed the challenges players face when choosing a school for the wrong reasons, such as chasing NIL deals without considering their long-term goals.
