"As you move up, you gotta give up": Ohio State HC Ryan Day details decision behind quitting play-calling duties

Last month, Ohio State coach Ryan Day opened up about his decision to step away from play-calling duties. Speaking with college football analyst Joel Klatt on Fox Sports' "Big Noon Conversations," Day discussed the pressure he's facing ahead of the upcoming 2024 season.

[03:42] “You’re constantly chasing this 1 or 2%,” Day said. “The last couple of years, it’s been about drive and play. You need to focus on what’s working and be honest about what needs improvement.
“I think as you move up, you got to give up. That wasn’t easy for me, but I feel like the time is right now, with the transfer portal, with NIL, there’s more and more energy and time that needs to be focused on the players in those areas.”

The Buckeyes have been busy in the transfer portal this recruiting season. They are the top-rated 2025 class, boasting 23 commits, including defensive tackle Maxwell Roy and linebacker Riley Pettijohn.

Republican VP candidate gives take on Ryan Day's job security

JD Vance, the Republican VP candidate and Ohio State alum, has shared his thoughts on the intense Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry. After three straight losses to Michigan, there's a buzz about whether Ryan Day's job could be on the line if the Buckeyes falter again this year.

Vance, who graduated from Ohio State and has deep ties to the Buckeyes, was candid in an interview with Semafor. When asked if Day should be let go if Ohio State loses a fourth consecutive game to Michigan, Vance was taken aback.

"Look, I have to give a diplomatic answer here: Look, Ohio State fans, I’m certainly among them — we have been spoiled by the last 15 years of the OSU/Michigan rivalry, and I think that I really want us to win, and I’ll be really pissed off as a fourth year in a row, but that’s all I’ll say," Vance said.

When Day took over the Buckeyes in 2019, Ohio State boasted of winning 15/16 games against Michigan. However, the tables have turned since then, with the Wolverines winning three games on the trot.
