Boise State starting QB 2024: Who will start for Spencer Danielson's team in Week 10?
Spencer Danielson's Boise State Broncos continue their Cinderella story on Friday night when they clash with the San Diego State Aztecs. The Broncos are currently the No. 15 school in the nation and have a 6-1 overall record and a perfect Mountain West mark of 3-0. To their credit, their only defeat this season was a Week 2 loss to Oregon, now the first team in the nation, 37-34.
Leading Boise State this season is quarterback Maddux Madsen, a redshirt sophomore whom coach Spencer Danielson named the starter over USC transfer Malachi Nelson. Nelson was the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2023, per ESPN.
Madsen played nine games in the 2023 season, recording 1,234 passing yards and nine touchdowns.
Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen's stats in 2024
Maddux Madsen has thrown for 1,482 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. His QBR stands at 73.6, which ranks 26th in the nation. He has also shown a slight improvement over last year's completion percentage (61.4% vs. 62.2%). Madsen has also run for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
While these aren't Heisman-worthy numbers, Madsen has proven to be a reliable passer for the Broncos. That, paired with the Heisman-worthy performances of running back Ashton Jeanty, has been more than enough to propel Boise State to victory so far.
Boise State's QB depth chart
Madsen's backup is Malachi Nelson, who joined Boise State from the transfer portal in January 2024. As a transfer, Nelson was rated 4-star by 247Sports and was the 15th overall quarterback on the market.
In 2024 so far, Nelson played in two games for the Broncos (vs. Utah State and Portland State), recording 113 passing yards and an interception. He has also been sacked twice.
