CFP Bracket after Week 3: Top 4 teams that are already out of college football playoff contention in 2024

Week 3 of the college football season is complete, and with it goes the hopes of making the playoffs for several teams. Although no team can be mathematically eliminated this early in the season, some teams' performances and records indicate that they do not have much of a chance.

Teams out of playoff contention after Week 3

#1 Florida

Florida has had a disastrous start to the season, and the Gators fell to 1-2 this week after a 33-20 loss to Texas A&M. Not only was it a bad loss, but it was to another SEC team.

Florida's schedule does not get any easier, with games against Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, LSU and Ole Miss still on the schedule. So, it looks like playoff contention is off the table for the Gators this year.

#2 Florida State

Florida State has not come anywhere close to living up to expectations this year. The Seminoles lost 20-12 to Memphis this week, dropping its record to 0-3.

Although this was not an in-conference matchup, its first two losses were. DJ Uiagalelei has not lived up to expectations, and neither has the rest of the roster.

The Seminoles will not be in CFP playoff contention this year. It would need to go nearly undefeated to make the playoffs at this point, and that is very unlikely to happen.

#3 Kentucky

It is hard to blame Kentucky for losing this week. In fact, only losing 13-12 to number-one-ranked Georgia is, in fact, impressive. But it drops the Wildcats' record to 1-2. Kentucky has lost both of its in-conference games so far this season and sits at the bottom of the SEC standings.

If playoff contention is something the Wildcats care about, the team will need to pull off some big upsets. Kentucky still has games against Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas on the schedule, so getting those upsets is almost as unlikely as the team's chances of making the playoffs at this point.

#4 Kansas

Kansas fell to 1-2 this week with a 23-20 loss to UNLV. Although it was not a blowout, the Jayhawks need to win games against teams of UNLV's caliber if it is going to make the playoffs. Having lost to UNLV and Illinois in back-to-back weeks, it does not look likely for the Jayhawks to have a big turnaround.

The one saving grace for Kansas is that it has not played any in-conference games yet. However, it would likely need to win all of those games to have a chance to enter playoff contention.
