Coaches Poll Top 25 after Week 4: Georgia & Texas lead the show while Michigan stands at No. 12

After Week 4, the Coaches Poll saw very little change in the higher rankings. The shifts, not unusually, were mostly toward the bottom of the top 25, as voted by several college football coaches. The poll's top five remained the same.

The top teams

The top five remained unchanged from the previous week. Georgia and Texas held on to the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Of the 55 coaches, 35 picked Georgia first. Texas was chosen as No. 1 by 18 voters. Third-ranked Ohio State was the top pick on the remaining two ballots.

The Buckeyes, Alabama and Ole Miss all retained their spots. Tennessee and Oregon flip-flopped, with the Vols rising to No. 6 while the Ducks slipped to No. 7. The only movement within the top 10 was Miami jumping to No. 9 after winning, coming up from No. 11. Missouri, on the other hand, fell out of the top 10, dropping from eighth to 11th after an overtime win over Vanderbilt.

The new teams

This week's poll saw a pair of new entrants. Illinois had been the top team in the "receiving votes" category, but after taking down then-No. 22 Nebraska, the 4-0 Illinois are now ranked No. 21.

Meanwhile, BYU was near the bottom of the "receiving votes" category, but the Cougars jumped all the way to No. 22 after thumping Kansas State.

The fallen teams

Meanwhile, top squads dropped out of the top 25 poll. Nebraska slid to 11th in the "receiving votes" category (thus, 36th) after losing to Illinois.

Memphis, on the other hand, did not receive any votes at all after losing to Navy. The Tigers were previously ranked No. 23.

League dominance

The SEC's dominance at the top of the Coaches Poll continued, with five of the top six teams being from the SEC. Overall, the top 10 consists of those five SEC teams, three Big Ten teams, Miami from the ACC and Utah out of the Big 12.

A total of nine SEC teams are represented within the top 25 in total. With Michigan's big win, the Big Ten can claim four of the top dozen schools in the poll.
