Da'Shawn Womack transfer portal prospects: 3 potential destinations for the LSU DE

LSU Tigers defensive edge Da'Shawn Womack is reportedly set to enter the transfer portal. On3 reported on Tuesday that the sophomore edge rusher plans to leave Baton Rouge in search of a new home.

In two seasons with the Tigers, Womack posted 23 tackles along with 2.5 sacks but couldn’t crack a deep starting lineup of edge rushers, which features Sai’vion Jones and Bradyn Swinson. While both Jones and Swinson are headed to the NFL after this year, Womack reportedly is not sticking around as well, which will leave the Tigers thin on the edge of the defensive line.

Da'Shawn Womack reportedly felt first-year defensive coordinator Blake Baker was not able to use him properly, opting instead to turn to his veterans and only utilizing him in third-down situations.

Coaches are high on the former five-star recruit, who was one of the nation’s top players coming out of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. His 6-foot-5, 260-pound frame, which has the potential to create nightmares for opposing offensive linemen, will make Womack a highly sought-after transfer prospect.

Da'Shawn Womack is good at generating pressure and getting to the quarterback, showing flashes of his potential when he sees action in a lot of third-down situations in his two years at LSU. All that talent and ability may even be good enough for him to be an NFL first-round prospect when given the right situation.

It can also be a question mark on Womack’s part for potential recruiters as to why he did not highly feature on a defense that only ranks 11th in yards allowed and 13th in points allowed.

He still has two more eligible seasons left in his college career, and a situation where he can fit in like a glove and succeed the most is all that he needs. Let's look at three potential landing spots he could choose to explore.

3 potential landing spots for LSU DE Da'Shawn Womack

#1 Georgia Bulldogs

There will be mutual interest here, as Georgia was one of the schools that offered Da'Shawn Womack coming out of high school. The Bulldogs’ defense this season was middle of the pack in points scored (seventh) and yards per game (ninth) in the SEC. They also rank seventh in sacks, with linebackers Chaz Chambliss and Jalon Walker accounting for a third (11) of the team’s total sacks (30) this season.

With Carson Beck leaving for the NFL after this season, the Bulldogs would look to shore up that defense to try and remain near the top of the standings while they look for his successor.

#2 Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies will be one of the teams looking to make a big splash on this transfer portal after another middle-of-the-pack season. They started solid, winning seven straight games after losing their opener, but ended in a whimper, losing three of their final four games, all to conference powerhouses.

The Aggies ranked in the middle of the SEC in points allowed (eighth) and near the bottom in total yards allowed (12th). In advanced stats, they rank near the bottom in sacks (14th) and stop rate (ninth in the SEC, 46th in the NCAA).

Da'Shawn Womack could shore up a defensive line that features Nic Scourton and Cashius Howell to create a credible pass rush. The Aggies could also use him to improve their 11th-ranked run defense, which allows 137.7 yards per game.

#3 Auburn Tigers

With Jalen McLeod entering the NFL draft next year and a bunch of senior linebackers leaving as well, it will leave a gaping hole in that Auburn defensive front. Da'Shawn Womack can just come in and reinforce the trenches with sophomore Keldric Faulk, with breakout freshman Demarcus Riddick manning the middle.

Auburn ranks ninth in the SEC for total defense, allowing 330.8 yards per game, with 117 of those allowed on the run.
