Florida Atlantic starting QB 2024: Who will start for Tom Herman's team in Week 10?
Despite some worrisome moments a few weeks before playing UTSA, Florida Atlantic's quarterback, Cam Fancher, has managed to remain in the starting position for the Owls despite a turf toe injury. Fancher entered Boca Raton during the off-season after leaving Marshall in December. Before joining the Florida Atlantic, he was the Thundering Herd's starting quarterback for a season and a half.
He was announced as Florida Atlantic's starting quarterback in late August.
“Cam [Fancher] had a really good spring, summer and has had a really good three and a half weeks of fall camp and hasn’t done anything to let go of that spot,” coach Tom Herman said.
As a starter, Fancher has an overall record of 11-6. In his second season with Marshall, he threw for 1,558 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions, which improved to 2,162 with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions the following season.
Cam Fancher's numbers in 2024 for Florida Atlantic
So far this season, Fancher has 1,154 passing yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. That gives him a low QBR of 35.3, ranking him 113th in the country. One bright spot has been his ability to be a dual-threat quarterback, with 344 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
He's on track to break his career rushing record, which he set in 2022 with 466 yards and a touchdown.
His completion percentage did drop when compared with his last season with the Thundering Herd (61% vs. 65.6%). In 2023 with Marshall, Fancher had 2,162 passing yards, with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The last of those stats probably cost his position with the school.

Besides Cam Fancher, the Owls have Tyriq Starks and Kasen Weisman as backup and third-string quarterbacks. Starks was an unranked prospect out of Lakeland, Florida, according to 247Sports. He joined Florida Atlantic in May 2022.
Weisman was a three-star recruit from Douglasville, Georgia, who originally joined the Colorado Buffaloes for the 2023 season. He joined the transfer portal in December 2023 and was on his way to Boca Raton by April 2024. He was also a three-star transfer and was ranked as the 66th signal-caller in the market by 247Sports.
