Former Heisman winner Joe Burrow once shared his tough time with Urban Meyer at Ohio State: "He told me I throw like a girl one time"
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow had a storied college football career. He started with the Ohio State Buckeyes (2015-2017), where he played under coach Urban Meyer, and the LSU Tigers (2018-2019), where he played under Ed Orgeron.
During a May 2022 appearance on the "Full Send" podcast, Burrow revealed how his relationship with the controversial Meyer evolved during his time playing under him.
"It got intense at times, and I wasn't playing, and we were competing, and I was the backup quarterback, but I loved coach Meyer, there's nothing but love there," Burrow said.
"He's the kind of guy that when a new guy gets there, he's gonna put him in the fire and see how he responds, and so my first couple of years, he stands behind the QB, and if you make a bad throw, he's gonna let you know it, and some guys can handle it, some guys can't.
"Once you get through that and he realizes that this guy is a tough guy, good player, works hard, then the relationship kinda switches to more of a friend than a hard coach on you. He got the best out of me, that's for sure. He told me I throw like a girl one time."
Joe Burrow, who is the current Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, also revealed the reasons behind his transfer from Ohio State to LSU before he was drafted into the NFL in 2020.
"So I graduated in three years, and the transfer portal wasn't a thing when I transferred, so you couldn't just move unless you graduated, so I graduated," Burrow said. "You couldn't just hop in the portal like you can these days. The writing was on the wall, so I broke my hand before my last season in Ohio State, and it kind of set me back."
Joe Burrow was disliked by LSU teammates
When Joe Burrow lost out on the Ohio State Buckeyes' QB1 battle to Dwayne Haskins and transferred to the LSU Tigers in 2018, his new teammates did not like his reserved attitude, as revealed by former tight end Thaddeus Moss during an interview with ESPN.
"I'd say the mood was 95% against Joe," former LSU tight end Moss said. "He is a great guy, very personable and cool once you get to know him. But he was very, very focused and specific about what he was doing. So he can come off like a d---head because he cares so much about what he's focused on.
"I'm trying to come up with a word you can use. Nah, d---head is the best way to describe it."
Joe Burrow asserted his authority in the locker room and led the LSU Tigers to a national championship in his second season. He won the Heisman Trophy with 1,846 more votes than second-placed Jalen Hurts to complete one of the greatest ever seasons in college football history.
