Former Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes once shared the biggest piece of advice he received while preparing for the draft

Before he was an NFL star with the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes had a storied college football career. He was the No. 29 ranked quarterback and the 398-ranked student-athlete overall in the class of 2014, according to 247Sports. He opted to join Texas Tech, despite an offer from Oklahoma State.

In 32 games played for the Red Raiders, Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards on 63.5% completion, resulting in 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions before declaring for the NFL Draft.

During an interview on the "Dan Patrick Show" before the 2017 NFL Draft, the outspoken Chiefs star shared the best advice he got regarding the draft process.

"I mean, just be ready for anything. Teams that you think are gonna draft you probably won't get you so you ask me the biggest piece of advice I'm not gonna be set on one team hoping to draft me, I'm gonna be out there ready just for any situation and ready to make the best of that," Mahomes said.

Patrick Mahomes led the Red Raiders to a 13-19 record during his three-year college football career before being drafted No. 10 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2017 NFL Draft.

Patrick Mahomes continues to support Texas Tech

Despite departing Lubbock in 2017, Patrick Mahomes has continued to support his alma mater, donating $5 million to the Texas Tech Red Raiders athletic department for their End Zone project a few months ago.

The Kansas City star also signed six Texas Tech student-athletes to NIL deals as part of the "Team Mahomes" project, which ties into a 10-year Adidas deal signed by the Red Raiders due to Mahomes association with the apparel giants.

Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt showed his appreciation to Mahomes after the deal was announced.

“The creation of Team Mahomes further positions Texas Tech Athletics as a national leader in NIL. This wouldn’t be possible without a tremendous partner in adidas that believes strongly in investing in our student-athletes under the Patrick Mahomes brand,” Hocutt said.
“In this era of sports, there aren’t many generational athletes like Patrick Mahomes who promote their alma mater so proudly and give back in such a meaningful manner.”

The legacy of Mahomes in Lubbock is already widely acknowledged after he was inducted into the program's exclusive Ring of Honor and he has even gotten his personalized Gladiator logo on the Jones AT&T Stadium turf.
