This season, McNamara has gotten out to a strong start. In his first game of the season against Illinois State, he threw 21 completions on 31 attempts and 252 yards. Three of those passes resulted in touchdowns. He will start again this week in the Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup.

Iowa vs. Iowa State: Head-to-head history
Iowa and Iowa State have a long and prolific history. The two teams first competed in 1894 and have since played 70 games against each other. They competed often between 1894 and 1934, but there was then an over 40-year hiatus until they played again in 1977.
Since the rivalry started again, the two teams have played every year with one exception. There wasn't a game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Iowa has dominated the matchup for the most part over the years. The Hawkeyes have a 47-23 record against Iowa State and have won eight of the last 10 games. That includes winning 20-13 last year. The Cyclones will hope to turn things around in this year's Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup.
