Kaidon Salter transfer portal: 3 potential landing spots for Liberty QB
Liberty QB Kaidon Salter is apparently on the move. The highly regarded passer has indicated his intention to put his name into the transfer portal and find another home to finish his college career. Salter had a disappointing 2024 season but showed tremendous skills in 2023. He's likely to be a plug-and-play guy at his final stop.
Salter, who had originally committed to and signed with Tennessee, moved on to Liberty after being dismissed from Tennessee following an arrest. In 2023, he passed for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns for Liberty, leading the Flames to a 13-1 season. Salter also rushed for 1,089 yards and 12 scores. In 2024, Liberty slid to 8-3 as Salter's production was down.
However, the veteran QB will doubtlessly draw attention from a variety of major programs. Here are three Salter might want to consider:
Three potential landing spots for Kaidon Salter
#3 Oklahoma
The Sooners are retooling after a troubled 2024 season. QB Jackson Arnold has indicated that hell wibe moving on.
Salter could be Oklahoma's answer. Coach Brent Venables can't afford another negative season or his job will likely be lost. OU is a pass-happy team that needs a new trigger man for their offense.
In 2024, Oklahoma was dead-last in the SEC in passing yardage and 15th in passing efficiency. The 6-6 Sooners alternated Arnold and freshman Michael Hawkins Jr., but neither was effective. Salter could be a quick fix.
#2 Auburn
Speaking of teams that struggled offensively, take fellow SEC squad Auburn. The Tigers improved down the stretch, but senior Payton Thorne is out of eligibility. Hugh Freeze has always been an offensive guru and coached Salter in his first two seasons at Liberty.
There's an interesting combination of familiarity and opportunity at Auburn. Despite a tough season, the Tigers continue to attract impressive recruiting classes full of talented athletes. Salter could be the missing piece for Auburn to climb above this year's 5-7 mark. If not, Freeze might be job hunting again.
#1 Indiana
Finally, likely CFP entrant Indiana is in the market for a new QB. Super-efficient Kurtis Rourke was a grad transfer from Ohio University. Rourke had been competent with the Bobcats, but there was no real reason to expect Indiana to have an offensive explosion.
However, the Hoosiers are second in the NCAA in scoring offense, so adding a more talented and athletic passer could hardly hurt. Curt Cignetti has proven his bonafides this season. The opportunity to jump straight to a playoff team where he could play from day one will likely be significant to Salter.
