Kansas State vs Houston Preview
These two teams could not be more opposite on the offensive side of the ball. The Wildcats are one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses in college football. They've scored 38 points or more in four games and 41 or more in three games this year.
Kansas State is coming off a close 29-27 win against the Kansas Jayhawks, who have also been dynamic on offense, but with more inconsistencies. Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson threw for 253 passing yards and two passing touchdowns in the air, with 63 rushing yards and a rushing TD. His dual-threat game continues to make the Wildcats one of the hardest teams to plan for.
DJ Giddens has emerged as one of the best running backs in the Big 12 and will be called on to open up lanes for Johnson. He had 102 rushing yards against the Jayhawks.
It was Johnson's second consecutive game linking up with sophomore tight end Garrett Oakley, who is a key part of the offense and the highlight of a deep Wildcats TE group, which Johnson appreciates.
“(The tight ends) do the dirty work, and they get rewarded for it, so credit to our coaches for giving us the good stuff,” Johnson said on Tuesday, via Stay Alive in Power. “How they coach, and the type of detail we try to get them to focus on in practice, it just continues to show as we step on the field for games.”
Houston has been the opposite as they have struggled to score. They've been shut out twice this season (34-0 against Cincinnati and 20-0 against Iowa State) and recorded just seven points in their opening game loss against UNLV 27-7.
They were able to play their style of football in a 17-14 victory over the Utah Utes. Cougars QB Zeon Chriss threw for just 61 passing yards.
It's difficult to imagine a scenario where Houston can outscore Kansas State. While the Cougars' defense has had some good moments under coach Willie Fritz, it likely won't be enough to stop Johnson.
