Kirk Campbell replacements: 3 potential targets for Michigan's OC job after latest firing
Michigan Wolverines made a big move this week, parting ways with their offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell following a 13-10 victory over Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 14. The move comes after a disappointing 7-5 season in 2024 and with the No. 1 recruit in the nation, Bryce Underwood committing to their program, the change in coaching position was no surprise.
In the absence of Campbell, tights end coach Steve Casula will serve as interim offensive coordinator. Even he could be a possible replacement depending on how Michigan's offense fares in the upcoming Bowl game.
With that in mind, let's take a look at coaches who Sherrone Moore could replace Kirk Campbell's position with.
3 potential candidates likely to replace Kirk Campbell for Michigan OC job
3) Tyson Helton
Some good quarterbacks have come from under the leadership of Tyson Helton who is currently the head coach of Western Kentucky. He helped UAB quarterback Joe Webb become a good dual-threat quarterback. He also developed Sam Darnold during his time at USC.
While going from HC to OC could be a demotion, a switch to a highly resourceful Michigan program is what he may like more. Helton led Western Kentucky to an 8-4 season in 2024.
2) Joe Craddock
Joe Craddock's name on this list shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He's already deemed as a great fit under Sherrone Moore.
As far as experience is concerned, he has held the role for SMU, Arkansas, Troy and Tulane. The kind of offense he runs could suit Bryce Underwood's talent well. Under him, Tulane has done well on the passing front this season, and a switch could be on the radar at Ann Arbor.
1) Joe Moorhead
Currently serving as head coach of Akron, Moorhead has been a fine offensive coordinator previously during his stints with Penn State (2016-17) and Oregon (2020-21). He believes in leading the offense efficiently and with Underwood's passing game being a dominant part of him as signal-caller, the fit seems ideal.
However, whether he wants to leave Akron is altogether another big question.
