Mikey Matthews Transfer Portal: Likely landing spots for Cal WR
For the second time in two seasons, wide receiver Mikey Matthews is back in the transfer portal. Matthews spent a season at Utah and then played last year at California. But now, he's on the hunt for his third home in three seasons. Matthews should certainly draw some interest.
As a true freshman at Utah in 2023, Matthews caught 29 passes for 261 yards. He also returned kickoffs and punts. But Matthews transferred after the season and chose Cal. In 2024, Matthews finished with 32 receptions for 272 yards and a touchdown as a slot receiver. He also returned punts.
The 5-foot-9 Matthews could end up at several schools, with the following as likely suspects.
Mikey Matthews Transfer Portal: 4 likely landing spots
#4. Michigan
The Wolverines were significantly involved with Matthews out of high school. Given the struggles of the UM passing game in 2024, he could be part of fixing that problem. Michigan passed for just 133.6 yards per game. Only tight end Colson Loveland topped 23 catches or 248 yards.
Matthews could work the middle of the field and help UM open things up for big plays on the edge of the defensive. His speed and experience make him a good fit for the Wolverines.
#3. Washington State
The Cougars had an impressive 2024 season and could benefit from another receiving target. Washington State is a bit behind the money train in college football, as they're working to get the Pac-12 back off the ground. QB John Mateer has headed out in the transfer portal.
Washington State's top two receivers from a season ago were seniors. There's an opening of opportunity. Washington State was one of the schools that recruited Matthews significantly out of high school. If he wants to be sure of plenty of opportunities to play, Washington State could be his next stop.
#2. Colorado
Speaking of opportunity, playing in the shootout offense of Colorado could be a natural move for Matthews. "Coach Prime" took the Buffaloes from 1-11 to 9-3 in two years. He has lost Heisman winner Travis Hunter and several other significant receivers. But Deion will be reloading and not rebuilding.
The chance to get an experienced power conference receiver with multiple years of eligibility may be attractive to Sanders. Colorado recruited Matthews out of high school and could be luckier this time around.
#1. Boise State
A school that went after Matthews extensively in his initial recruitment, Boise State could be an easy combination of individual opportunity and team excellence. Three of Boise's top four wide receivers were seniors this season.
The Broncos are in the CFP and Matthews would have an opportunity to still play meaningful football, but also to use his top-shelf skills in an environment where he certainly would not lack for playing time. Boise might make sense for everyone.
