3 reasons why Alabama Crimson Tide could beat Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs in Week 5

The Alabama Crimson Tide has gotten off to a strong start to the 2024 college football season. The No. 4 program in the nation was able to kick off its season with a blowout victory over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. They followed that up with a blowout win over the South Florida Bulls before going on the road and beating the Wisconsin Badgers in similar fashion.

After a bye last weekend, Alabama will have its toughest test of the young season in Week 5 as the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs come to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It will mark the first of five conference matchups for Alabama against an opponent that is currently ranked.

Here's a closer look at three reasons why the Crimson Tide could remain undefeated.

3 reasons why Alabama Crimson Tide could beat Georgia Bulldogs in Week 5

#1. Their defense has been elite

Alabama has been elite on the defensive side of the football this season. They have allowed 8.7 points per game and 248.0 yards per game, ranking sixth and 13th in the nation, respectively. They have also recorded 18.0 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in three games. Their defense showing up and playing big will be key in this top-five matchup.

#2 Jalen Milroe must get going

The Crimson Tide has averaged 49.0 ppg and 466.7 ypg, ranking sixth and 24th in the nation, respectively. Quarterback Jalen Milroe has been a big reason for their success as he has thrown for 590 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. He has completed 67.3% of his passes while adding 156 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 36 carries.

The Georgia Bulldogs defense has been elite and their offense has played mistake-free football over the first three weeks. Getting their dual-threat quarterback off to a strong start will be pivotal for Alabama.

#3. Striking for big plays

One area in which the Alabama Crimson Tide has shined is their big play ability. 13 of their 21 touchdowns have come on plays of more than 20 yards. Furthermore, they've scored at least three such touchdowns in every game so far this season. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have allowed 6.0 ppg and 202.0 ypg, ranking third and fourth in the nation, respectively.

Alabama will need to figure out how to get its offense going against one of the toughest defensive units in college football. While it may be difficult to consistently move the ball downfield, breaking loose for a couple of big plays could swing the tide in their favor.
