3 reasons why the Georgia Bulldogs can beat Kalen DeBoer's Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 5
The Georgia Bulldogs have gotten off to a strong start to the 2024 college football season. The No. 2 program in the nation was able to get its season off to a strong start with a blowout victory over the then-No.14 Clemson Tigers. They followed that with another blowout against the FCS-level Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles before narrowly escaping a trip to Lexington for their SEC opener against the Kentucky Wildcats.
After a bye last weekend, Georgia will have its toughest test of the young season in Week 5 as they travel to Tuscaloosa to face the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It will mark the first of four conference matchups for Georgia against opponents currently ranked in the top six.
Here's a closer look at three reasons why the Bulldogs could remain undefeated.
3 reasons why Georgia Bulldogs could beat Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 5
#1. Their defense has been elite
The Bulldogs have been elite on the defensive side of the football this season. They have allowed just 6.0 points per game and 202.0 yards per game, ranking third and fourth in the nation, respectively. They have also recorded 21.0 tackles for loss, eight sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries in three games. Continuing to play elite on that side of the ball and limiting Alabama's offense in big play ability will be key.
#2. Their offense continues to play mistake-free football
Georgia's offense took a step back in their SEC opener, scoring just 13 points after averaging 41.0 ppg over their first two games. While they were unable to put points on the board at the same rate, they continued to play mistake-free football and won the turnover battle for the third consecutive game. Furthermore, the Bulldogs have yet to turn the ball over this season and that could prove pivotal in Week 5.
#3. Strong special teams play
The Bulldogs have been among the best special teams units this season. They have scored 9.7 kicking points per game, which ranks 14th in the nation. Peyton Woodring has knocked down all 11 of his extra point attempts and all six of his field goal attempts, including a season-long attempt from 55 yards out.
Meanwhile, Brett Thorson has punted 11 times for an average of 49.5 yards per punt, ranking seventh in the nation. Finally, Georgia's 28.3 punt return yards per game ranks 24th. In a matchup of two elite defenses, strong special teams could make all the difference.
