5 college football coaches on the verge of getting fired entering Week 4 ft. Billy Napier
The 2024 college football season has begun to heat up as the calendar turns to Week 4. The early portion of the year has brought several shocking upsets and has also seen multiple coach's seats begin to heat up. In some cases, the coach entered the year already on the hot seat and hasn't done much to improve the situation.
Here's a closer look at five college football coaches who could be on the verge of losing their jobs before the end of the season.
5 college football coaches on the verge of getting fired entering Week 4
#1. Billy Napier
Billy Napier is in danger of not making it to the end of the season if the Florida Gators don't turn things around. After going 11-14 over his first two seasons – finishing with a losing record in both years – the Gators are off to a 1-2 start in 2024. Their lone win came against an FCS opponent, while both of their losses have come in embarrassing fashion at home.
Florida's schedule will not get much easier as they have five meetings with opponents ranked in the top 16. Four of those matchups are against teams ranked in the top six.
#2. Dave Aranda
Dave Aranda entered the season with a 23-25 mark over his first four years leading the Baylor Bears. The 2021 season, which is his single winning season, appears to be an outlier as the program is 11-23 outside of that year. While the Bears have gotten off to a 2-1 start, their loss came in conference play. The remainder of their games will be conference matchups, with two ranked opponents on the schedule.
#3. Sam Pittman
Sam Pittman also entered the season with a 23-25 mark over his first four years leading the Arkansas Razorbacks. While they are 2-1, their single defeat was a difficult pill to swallow, as they choked away the game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Furthermore, their two wins came against less-than-impressive opponents. The Razorbacks will begin a brutal conference schedule in Week 4. They have six ranked opponents on the schedule, four of whom are in the top seven.
#4. Stan Drayton
Stan Drayton is another coach that may not make it through the season. After back-to-back 3-9 seasons to start his head coaching career, the Temple Owls are 0-3 in 2024. While they can still turn things around due to a relatively light schedule up ahead, they could be searching for a new coach sooner rather than later.
#5. Kenni Burns
Kenni Burns led the Kent State Golden Flashes to a 1-11 mark in his first season as head coach last year. They may have a difficult time even getting one win this year. The Golden Flashes suffered 31 and 71-point road losses to the Pittsburgh Panthers and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively.
The game between those two ugly beatdowns may have been the worst, however, as they fell 23-17 to the St. Francis (PA) Red Flash, an FCS program that finished 4-6 last season, at home.
