Andrew Mukuba injury update: Texas HC Steve Sarkisian offers insight on Longhorns DB amid open week

Andrew Mukuba has been an effective force in the Texas Longhorns' defense this season. However, the defensive back is nursing a knee injury that kept him out of Texas' Week 9 win against Vanderbilt.

While many have been eager to learn when Mukuba will return to action, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian provided an update on the player amid Texas' open week.

When asked about Andrew Mukuba's injury update during Wednesday's Southeastern Conference coaches' teleconference, Sarkisian insisted that the safety was making good strides in his recovery.

“He (Mukuba) is on the mend. I think he’s making good progress,” Sarkisian said. “Probably [there will] be a better answer next week as we get back into game week mode.”

Sarkisian's recent comments on Mukuba suggest that the player might be questionable to face the Florida Gators in Week 11 on Nov. 9. Texas has an off in Week 10.

Mukuba sustained a left knee injury in the fourth quarter of Texas' loss against Georgia on Oct. 19. While there were initial fears that the player's season might be cut short, Sarkisian has suggested that the safety could return in the coming weeks.

In seven games for Texas this season, Mukuba has tallied 25 total tackles (18 solo tackles), two interceptions and two pass breakups. The Longhorns will want the defensive back to return soon since they have a tough run of fixtures in the back end of the season which they need to win to remain in the College Football Playoff picture.
