"Arch Manning needs a role in the game against Texas A&M": CFB insider delivers verdict on Texas' QB situation amid Quinn Ewers' shaky form
The No. 3 Texas Longhorns (10-1, 6-1, SEC) face a crucial matchup against the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies (8-3, 5-2) on Saturday. College football insider J.D. PicKell believes it’s time for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian to shake things up by giving backup quarterback Arch Manning a role in the offense.
Longhorns QB1 Quinn Ewers has not been a consistent performer this season, showing shaky form and limited mobility due to injury. On Wednesday, PicKell suggested integrating Manning could add a dynamic edge to Texas’ playbook during this last stretch of the season.
“I’m not saying Arch Manning should be the starter,” PicKell said. “Quinn Ewers is still the guy, but Arch brings something unique. Adding him for a few packages, especially quarterback-run-centric plays, could raise the offense’s overall level.”
Manning has impressed with his mobility and playmaking ability. He could offer fresh options like read options and jet sweeps.
“What I am saying is Arch Manning should have a role,” PicKell said. “Give him a couple of packages, primarily in my mind, quarterback run-centric.” [46:00]
For a Texas offense that has looked uncharacteristically inconsistent at times, these wrinkles could give Steve Sarkisian the upper hand against a tough Aggies defense.
“This is the time of year for wrinkles,” PicKell said. “You empty the clip, and Arch could be part of that.”
Manning's ability to convert short-yardage situations and energize the offense through his run game could be a game-changer.

Texas QB Arch Manning attracts transfer news
Texas’ teenage quarterback is attracting transfer attention because of his position in the Longhorns quarterback room. There’s uncertainty about his future in Austin, given Sarkisian’s liking for Ewers as the starting quarterback, which he has stressed enough times through the 2024 college football season.
However, Ewers has failed to reciprocate Sarkisian's confidence in him. He has had a rocky couple of months because of his injury mid-season. At that time, Manning filled the void perfectly and showed maturity for a quarterback his age.
Peyton Manning’s nephew has a $3.1 million value in the NIL marketplace (as per On3) and ranks as the No. 3 college football player in On3’s valuation list. That kind of earning power without consistent starts is a teaser for his star status and potential.
His on-field stats are also solid. Arch has a 67.8% completion rate, 939 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. He’s also shown a second side of his game with 81 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
However, with Ewers’ draft stock dipping, Texas could choose to stick with him for another year, potentially pushing Manning to seek playing time elsewhere. If a transfer happens, Alabama is a hot destination. Manning’s fit in Tuscaloosa could elevate his game and NIL value to new heights.
