"Basically surrender all power to Deion Sanders": Jason Whitlock issues reality check to Jerry Jones as Coach Prime gets linked to Cowboys role
Sports commentator Jason Whitlock believes Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should think twice before hiring Deion Sanders as his team's new coach. The Cowboys have struggled this season under coach Mike McCarthy and are getting close to being removed from the playoff picture. Dallas's failures have started a discussion amongst fans and broadcasters about Jones replacing McCarthy with Sanders. Whitlock chimed in Tuesday morning and thinks hiring the current Colorado Buffaloes coach would be the wrong decision.
During an episode of ESPN's "Get Up" on Nov. 11, former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan discussed the Cowboys (3-6 NFC) potentially hiring a new coach. He noted that coaches who have played for a team are succeeding in the league, like Dan Campbell with the Detroit Lions. Ryan believes Sanders can help Dallas.
"They need to have somebody that has the pride in that d*mn organization. Being a Dallas Cowboy, the pride you take in it, and by the way, Deion, everywhere he's been, he's been kicking, you know what," Ryan said.
Whitlock reacted to Ryan's comments on his podcast, "Fearless,", saying Sanders would want more power than what coaches like Campbell have.
"Deion's ego is far more enormous than Dan Campbell or DeMeco Ryans, and he's got an owner who is desperate, who has been playing the role of general manager, and so Deion is going to want more control," Whitlock said. "He'll have leverage with the media in a back-and-forth if he and Jerry ever disagree. I think it could be a tiny bit high risk for Jerry Jones makes this move. I think he'd have to basically surrender all power to Deion Sanders."
Dallas still has time to turn its season around with eight games remaining, but things look bleak. The Cowboys recently suffered a huge setback, losing starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the season due to a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, Sanders is having a great year with Colorado.
Sanders' 2024 Season with Buffaloes
"Coach Prime" has led the Buffaloes (7-2, 5-1 Big 12) to their best record since 2016. Fans and pundits have doubted the team's success this season, but they've achieved bowl eligibility and exceeded expectations.
The Buffaloes are coming off a dominant 41-27 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-4, 4-3) in Week 11 on Nov. 9. Colorado has three games remaining in the season, and they could be in contention for the College Football Playoff if they win out and win the Big 12 championship game.
