"Be the example when nobody is looking": Coach Prime cautions Colorado players with powerful message as new transfers schedule visits
In a team meeting on Friday, featured in a YouTube video by Well Off Media, Coach Prime urged his players to step up as role models for incoming team members, emphasizing accountability and setting the tone for the program’s future.
"We got a bunch of new kids coming in,” Deion Sanders said. “Y'all are not gonna mess this up. Because they have an expectation. Be the example when nobody is looking.”
The Buffaloes face significant offseason changes with Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, a potential first-round NFL draft pick, likely departing. With the transfer portal playing a critical role in rebuilding, the current window for non-graduate transfers closes on Dec. 28, while the next visitor window runs from Jan. 1-12.
Colorado has already landed some key talent. Former Alabama defensive lineman Jehiem Oatis, one of the top-ranked defenders in the portal, is one of them.
Reginald Hughes, a linebacker from Jacksonville State, committed to Colorado after visiting Boulder on Tuesday. Hughes marked the moment by updating his X profile picture in a Buffaloes jersey.
Sanders wrapped up Colorado's 2024 season with an impressive 9-3 record and prepares to face BYU in the Alamo Bowl. Despite adding only 14 high school recruits during this year’s early signing period—the second-smallest class in the conference—Coach Prime remains focused on reshaping the roster to continue the team’s upward trajectory.
Coach Prime wasted no time as the transfer portal gained momentum
Coach Prime is gearing up for a busy season with the transfer window officially open. Deion Sanders wasted no time addressing recruits as the transfer portal gained momentum. In early December, he tweeted a message that stood out:
“To many of the Portal Young Men that’s looking & searching for the right situation,” Sanders said. “You’re gonna get vetted thoroughly by us and then I pray u know the difference of being offered a bag & being offered a BLESSING. Ask Grandma-nem what I mean.”
The University of Colorado Buffaloes, led by Sanders, has also earned a spot in the 2024 Valero Alamo Bowl. They’ll face BYU on Dec. 28 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
