Bill Belichick spills the details of Transfer Portal success as NFL legacy comes in handy
North Carolina Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick appeared on the "Pat McAfee Show" on Monday to discuss how he was managing the ongoing transfer portal. The former NFL coach signed a five-year deal with the team on Wednesday.
"We've been talking to a number of players, and we have more coming this week as part of the portal that closes on Sunday," Belichick said. "So, we have guys coming in pretty much every day this week. (We are) Still talking to a couple of high school players."
The legendary coach said that the signing of Bryce Baker was a "big one" for the team. Baker's signing was announced by the team at the Tar Heels' basketball game on Saturday afternoon.
Baker was committed to joining the Tar Heels when Mack Brown was spearheading the program, and the new hire for the Tar Heels cemented the four-star quarterback's decision to play for North Carolina.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach said that he was also looking at players on teams competing in the College Football Playoff who could potentially enter the transfer portal.
"A lot of players and agents are coming to us": Bill Belichick speaks about growing interest from players to join UNC next season
North Carolina's program has caught the attention of several prospects and several athletes are looking to play under the 6-time Super Bowl winner. One example is the top high school prospect in the 2026 class, QB Jared Curtis, who spoke highly of Belichick and said that he wanted to visit UNC and meet Belichick.
Coach Belichick told McAfee that agents and players were contacting him about potentially joining the Tar Heels.
"Quite honestly, Pat, a lot of players and agents are coming to us saying we want to be part of the program. Is there a spot for us? Would you take this player or that player and so forth," Belichick said.
Belichick added that several athletes were represented by agents who he had interacted with during his time in the NFL. He spoke about how those relationships carried forward into his current stint.
With a revamped roster, Bill Belichick will try to lead North Carolina (6-6, 3-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) to a better season next year. The Tar Heels will take on the UConn Huskies in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on December 28.
