Brent Venables has one-word reaction to QB change question after Texas humiliation in Week 7
Brent Venables faced a barrage of questions after the Oklahoma Sooners (4-2, 1-2) were humiliated by a 34-3 score at the hands of the No. 1 Texas Longhorns (6-0, 2-0) in the Week 7 Red River Rivalry.
The Longhorns were rampant, dominating both sides of the ball and limiting the Sooners to 237 yards of offense. True freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. made his first start in the rivalry, but his lackluster performance raised concerns.
Oklahoma managed only three points, leaving fans wondering if a quarterback change would have done the team some good. When asked if Hawkins would remain under center, Venables had a swift, one-word response:
"No."
Despite mounting pressure during the game, too, Venables stood by his quarterback, opting not to make any changes mid-game. The Texas defense was relentless, and HC Steve Sarkisian couldn’t hide his excitement. He celebrated with the Golden Hat after reclaiming it for just the second time in the last seven meetings.
Meanwhile, Venables lamented his team’s inability to maintain momentum, saying:
"You get your opportunities against a great team, you have a very small margin for error."
This year’s Red River Rivalry was a nightmare for Oklahoma, something similar to 2022’s blowout. On the other hand, it was just the second victory for the Longhorns in their previous seven meeting with the Sooners.

Steve Sarkisian trumped Brent Venables in Red River Rivalry win
It was a day to rejoice for the Texas HC who pulled one up over Brent Venables in every department of the game. The win is the third-largest margin of victory for the Longhorns since 1971 in the Red River Rivalry, which started in 1929.
Sarkisian was all smiles postgame as he said:
"I think we played well in all three phases today."
The Longhorns’ defense, led by Pete Kwiatkowski, was the star of the show, choking Oklahoma to just three points. The Texas HC was impressed by veteran Michael Taaffe and newcomer Colin Simmons.
"We're tackling really well and not giving up explosive plays," he added.
Coming to the attack, Texas looked a bit rusty with Quinn Ewers at the helm, who returned to the starting lineup after missing two games because of his oblique strain.
"He made some really competitive plays, especially on third down," noted Sarkisian as Ewers gradually gained form.
Texas is undefeated in the 2024 college football season and announced itself as a serious contender for the national championship.
