Cam Ward’s standstill moment from Pop-Tarts Bowl goes viral

Cam Ward has made plenty of highlight-reel plays by scrambling around. In the Pop-Tarts Bowl, he made one by simply standing still.

During the second quarter of the game, with the Miami Hurricanes driving, Ward took the ball on a passing play. As the Iowa State pass rush didn’t get to him and no open receivers downfield, the quarterback simply stood there and, flat-footed, threw a pass to Mark Fletcher, who was running out of the backfield.

The play showed that Ward can also stay in the pocket and not rush to make a bad decision.

Cam Ward arrived at the Pop-Tarts Bowl with 4,123 yards, 36 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His passing yards and touchdowns established a new school record. The previous records were held by Bernie Kosar (yards) and Steve Walsh (touchdowns).

Ward arrived at Miami before the start of the 2024 season. He transferred after spending two years at Washington State. He also played two seasons at Incarnate Word.

The West Columbia, Texas native was a Heisman Trophy finalist, but finished fourth in the award voting. Colorado's Travis Hunter took the award, while Boise State's Ashton Jeanty and Oregon's Dillon Gabriel were the other finalists.
