Carson Beck makes the cut for an honorable list as Georgia takes on Texas
Quarterback Carson Beck is among the finalists for The Manning Award. He has led the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs to 10 wins and is one step closer to competing in the College Football Playoffs. Beck will try to make his case to win the annual quarterback award in their upcoming game against the No. 2 Texas Longhorns.
The announcement was made in a press release from the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Beck joins other talented quarterbacks, such as Jaxson Dart, Cam Ward, and Shedeur Sanders, on the list of candidates for the win. The winner will be revealed after the College Football National Championship game.
Georgia (10-2, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) is coming off a nail-biting 44-42 overtime win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-5, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) in Week 14 on Nov. 29. Beck helped get his team their final victory of the regular season after enduring eight overtimes.
He ended the game by completing 28 of 43 passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns. It's also worth noting that the Georgia quarterback didn't throw an interception, which he struggled with for parts of the season.
The win helped increase the Bulldog's chances of playing in the College Football Playoffs. Georgia will take on Texas (11-1, 7-1 SEC) in the SEC Championship on Dec. 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Beck will enter the game, completing 283 passes for 3,429 yards and 28 touchdowns for the year.
He'll be playing against Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, another finalist for The Manning Award. Both players will attempt to win the championship and proceed to get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
College Football Week 15: Georgia vs. Texas SEC Championship Game Preview
Georgia hopes to carry the momentum from the regular season to a victory over the Longhorns. They'll look for Beck to have another stellar performance without turning the ball over. He hasn't thrown an interception since the team's 41-34 loss to the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels (9-3, 5-3 SEC) in Week 11 on Nov. 9. The Bulldogs will need him to be mindful of his passing attempts against Texas' defense.
Georgia may also be confident in winning the SEC Championship matchup because they beat Texas 30-15 in Week 8 on Oct. 19. Although their quarterback didn't have his best showing, with three interceptions, they still outperformed the Longhorns.
Ewers also aims to prove why he should be chosen as the winner of The Manning Award. He will enter the contest with 206 completed passes for 2,307 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Longhorns have the ability on offense and defense to give Georgia issues despite losing in Week 8.
