CFB insider compares Arch Manning - Quinn Ewers situation to iconic 'Mean Girls' moment
The Arch Manning versus Quinn Ewers issue has continued to dominate the airwaves for almost two weeks. It came after the Texas Longhorns lost 22-19 to coach Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Manning got limited snaps in the loss despite Ewers struggling in the face of unrelenting pressure from the Bulldogs' defense.
During an appearance on Thursday's segment of "Get Up," analyst Greg McElroy came up with an iconic line when discussing the Manning versus Ewers issue.
"There's a moment in the 'Mean Girls' movie where they say, 'stop trying to make fetch happen.' That's kind of what I'm going to say about this Arch thing. Let's stop trying to make Arch into his uncles right now," McElroy said.
"He'll get there. He'll be a great player in time. I'm a real believer in his upside, I'm a believer in his ability. I think he could have a package in this system - seriously - I think in this playoffs it would not be surprising if in the red zone if he was on the field."
The calls for Ewers to be dropped intensified ahead of the No. 5 Texas Longhorns' first-round clash against the No. 12 Clemson Tigers. McElroy was one of the very few voices still advocating for his status over Arch Manning.
"But, being on the field for anything more than the situational play right now I think would be disadvantageous to an offense that's likely going to throw their way to victory," McElroy said.
"You look at the teams they're likely to face between now and the national championship, they're going to have to throw it to win the national championship. So, I think Arch is going to be a great player situationally, but at this point, Quinn's your guy and should hopefully take you to the promised land if you're a Longhorn fan."
Quinn Ewers backed over Arch Manning by analyst
During Friday's segment of "Get Up," ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum backed Quinn Ewers to get the nod in the college football playoffs for the Texas Longhorns over the talented Arch Manning.
“I think they would have to be desperate,” Finebaum said. “Steve Sarkisian has been so loyal to Quinn Ewers, and I don’t think he’ll take him out. They will have to be behind, and Quinn Ewers will have to be banged up. Otherwise, I think Arch Manning will just simply have to wait his turn until next year.”
The Arch Manning versus Quinn Ewers subplot for the Texas Longhorns will be one of the most intriguing aspects of the first round of the college football playoffs.
