CFB insider refuses to consider Cam Ward & Dillon Gabriel in the Heisman fight, calls it a two-man race between Ashton Jeanty & Travis Hunter
On Nov. 17, college football insider CJ Vogel described the current Heisman Trophy race as a contest between Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty on his X account.
Colorado cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter has been sensational for his team, but he has stiff competition from Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty.
"The 2024 Heisman should be a 2-man invitation – Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter," CJ Vogel wrote on X.
"Miss me with Cam Ward. Miss with Dillon Gabriel. It's a two man race," he further added.
With the 2024 college football season entering its final lap, the Heisman Trophy race appears to be gravitating around four options. However, Vogel refuses to take Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel into contention.
He sees it as a two-horse race involving Hunter and Jeanty. When asked whether Arizona State Sun Devils running back Cameron Skattebo is a worthy contender, Vogel responded:
“He’s a dog. But no.”
Vogel is not the only one who firmly believes in Hunter and Jeanty. Hunter’s team-mate Shedeur Sanders also took to X yesterday to back Hunter. He applauded the two-way star after the Buffaloes’ blitzkrieg over the Utah Utes on Saturday.
Why Travis Hunter is widely considered the favorite for Heisman Trophy?
The Colorado Buffalos’ two-way standout has returned after injury as the front-runner, impressing fans and pundits alike on both offense and defense.
While Dillon Gabriel remains in hot pursuit of Hunter, keeping the Ducks’ championship hopes alive, Jeanty, is the only other contender with record-chasing performances to back his case.
However, Travis Hunter is considered this season to be the +125 favorite. In Colorado’s 41-27 win against Texas Tech, Hunter put on a clinic of his two-way capabilities.
On the offensive front, Hunter caught nine passes for 99 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he played 53 snaps and was only targeted once, which demonstrated his lockdown average skills aplenty.
Over the season, Hunter has 69 receptions for 856 yards and nine touchdowns offensively, complemented by two interceptions, one forced fumble, seven passes defended and 20 defensive tackles. He is miles ahead as a dual-threat element in the Buffalos’ play, in a domain that is primarily dominated by quarterbacks.
Hunter is hugely responsible for Colorado’s resurgence with a 7-2 record and a shot at the Big 12 championship game. The Buffaloes’ success is intricately linked with Hunter’s versatility. Aiding his Heisman Trophy aspirations is the endorsement of Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders.
The former two-way player has labeled his protege as “the best player in college football.”
