"Charles Woodson didn't do it at this level": Urban Meyer left mesmerized with Travis Hunter's world-class talent after Baylor win
Sports commentator and former coach Urban Meyer was blown away by Travis Hunter's exceptional talent after Colorado's win over Baylor this week. In the thrilling game on Sept. 21, where the Buffaloes edged out the Bears 38-31 in overtime, Hunter stood out, playing both wide receiver and cornerback. He logged 145 snaps (82 snaps on offense and 63 on defense).
Hunter's two-way ability caught the attention of many, including Meyer. On Thursday's episode of The Triple Option, Meyer said:
“I keep hearing that there's others that done it. No, there has not,” Meyer said.
Meyer referenced standout players like Chris Gamble, Charles Woodson, and Myles Jack, who also played multiple positions:
“Chris Gamble (played cornerback, wide receiver, and kick returner) at Ohio State really was a hell of a player our own,” he said. “Charles Woodson ((played cornerback, Safety) was, he won the Heisman. But he didn't do it at this level. Myles Jack (played running back and linebacker) at UCLA, another great player. But they're bits and pieces.”
“This guy's [Hunter] playing 152 snaps, or 100 and 30 snaps in the game and I'm gonna add this, ‘He's an All-American type player at each position,’" he added.
Hunter’s forced fumble was a key highlight in what was an unforgettable night at Folsom Field. His stat line was equally impressive: seven catches, 130 receiving yards, two tackles (one for a loss), and that game-changing forced fumble.
Travis Hunter makes waves as top player in college football
Mark Ingram II, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, spoke highly of Travis Hunter on The Triple Option podcast.
"It [Heisman] goes to the best player in college football, not just the best quarterback," Ingram said.
Urban Meyer, who appeared on the show, praised Hunter after Colorado’s win against Baylor, calling it a "historic performance."
Two-way star Hunter has been unstoppable this season, racking up 472 yards and five touchdowns, plus an interception and forced fumble on defense.
Up next, the Colorado Buffaloes take on the University of Central Florida this weekend at 3:30 p.m. ET.
