Coach Prime's sneaker stealer Travis Hunter shares how he chooses gameday fits: "Leanna got all these cleats made to match our uniform"
Among the many mischiefs Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter engages in, stealing Deion Sanders' sneakers should top the list. The top Heisman contender this season is a sneaker aficionado who says he is among the first to sort out what he's going to wear for gameday.
Hunter appeared on Overtime podcast, discussing his game-day attire with Kaden Sonnabend and host Boogie. The cornerback-cum-wideout credited his fiancee Leanna for picking his game day attire, not letting him worry and rather focus completely on the game at hand.
"I'm the first person to kind of know what we’re wearing in that game. So, I just go back there, get a sneak peek, and then I decide what cleats I’m going to wear leading up to that game. Other than that, Leanna got all these cleats made to match our uniform, so it’s pretty easy for me to decide what cleats I’m going to wear," Hunter said.
The host further asked what Hunter does after he uses the cleats in the game.
"Keeping all my cleats this year, just in case I do win a Heisman, I'll be able to put all the uniforms and accessories I wore in those games right behind the trophy," Hunter added.
Deion Sanders' family-oriented figure appeased Travis Hunter to learn under him
Unlike many Colorado players, Travis Hunter was among the few who had offers from top college football programs before he went to Jackson State to play under Coach Prime in 2021. He followed him to Colorado ahead of last season and performances are there for everyone to see.
However, he had no doubt in his mind on which coach he wanted to learn under. And it gets deeper than only football stuff.
“My family felt comfortable first before he (Sanders) even made me feel comfortable," Hunter said on Richard Sherman podcast. "So my mom was just like, yeah, I think this is the best deal for us to go learn for somebody that actually did it, even though my mom don't watch football, she know who Coach Prime is.
"So it was kind of crazy just how he kept his family around, like having Shedeur as his quarterback Shilo standing around, his oldest son Bucky standing around, his daughters are standing around. It's just like, it's family oriented and that's exactly what I wanted to be and I wanted to learn from somebody like that," he added.
Travis Hunter is in the running to win the Heisman this season. He faces stiff competition from Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
