Coastal Carolina coach Tim Beck opens up on "Extremely Frustrating" Experience with College Football in 2024
Coastal Carolina coach Tim Beck opened up in a press conference about the flaws of the current college football market. Beck joined the Chanticleers in 2023. His record stands at 14-11 in 2024. Carolina finished 6-6 (3-5) in the Sun Belt conference.
Coach Tim told the press on Dec. 12 that college football in 2024 has become "Extremely frustrating."
"One of the things that's changing in the landscape of college football, you're not building a program anymore," Beck said. "This isn't a program. Each year you just build a team."
Although Beck joined the football coaching world in 1988 as an assistant coach, Coastal Carolina was his first team as a head coach. After joining, he led the program to a win against San Hose State in the Hawaii Bowl (24-14).
Tim Beck elaborated on the current state of the player recruitment process.
"The only way we can evaluate somebody in a portal is you watch this film," Beck said. "We can't go see them, we can't talk to them, nothing. They come here and you try to recruit them, that's it. And so it's probably a high possibility a lot of schools are gonna make a lot of mistakes cuz you don't get a chance to recruit the guys anymore."
Tim Beck's career highlights
Beck began coaching in 1988 at Miramar High and rose to college ranks at Illinois State and Kansas State. As Saguaro High’s coach, he led them to their first state title in 1995. After returning to college, Tim Beck became Missouri State's offensive coordinator, producing 4,542 yards in 1998.
At R.L. Turner High, he earned district Coach of the Year (2000) and led Mansfield Summit to playoff success. At Kansas, he guided the 2007 Orange Bowl-winning offense. At Nebraska, Beck coached a 1,147-yard season for Roy Helu Jr. and later became offensive coordinator. He later held key roles at Ohio State, Texas, and NC State.
Under him, Ethan Vasko, a sophomore quarterback, is growing. He has amassed 2,120 yards, 14 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season. We could see him make a game-changing impact in the upcoming Beach Bowl game against the UTSA Roadrunners on Dec. 23.
On the other hand, UTSA will bring their own sophomore QB, Owen McCown, who has remarkable stats. He was a 3-star recruit out of high school who began his collegiate career at Colorado in 2022. This season, he has registered 3,170 yards including 24 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
Though his tally exceeds Ethan Vasko in terms of yards (1,050 yards), McCown's average is 7.3 whereas Vasko averages 7.8.
