"Don't care that Ashton Jeanty might break Barry Sanders' record": CFB Insider downplays Boise State star's achievement to promote rival Travis Hunter
Travis Hunter vs. Ashton Jeanty. Hunter enters Week 13 as the favorite to win the coveted Heisman Trophy, although some would argue the Boise State running back should be the true favorite. While Hunter is giving a historic performance, given his ability to contribute on both sides of the ball, he isn't on pace to break any record.
On the other hand, Ashton Jeanty seems to have Barry Sanders' all-time single-season rushing record within reach. However, RJ Young is one of those who thinks not even that would be enough.
In a recent episode of his The Number One College Football Show, Young seemingly endorsed Hunter as the favorite and had this to say about Jeanty:
"I don't care that Ashton Jeanty might break Barry Sanders' record for rushing yards in a season. He's going to have to do it in the postseason unless he goes for 566 yards or something in this game coming up this weekend... Barry also did this in 11 games and he did it against Big Eight competition. Mountain West is not Big Eight competition."
So far this season, Jeanty has run for 2062 yards, with 27 touchdowns in 275 carries. He leads the nation in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and total carries. He's also the first player in 24 years, since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2000, to run for 2062 yards in a season.
Travis Hunter enters final week of regular season as clear favorite over Ashton Jeanty
With one week to go in the regular season, Travis Hunter is favored by the bookies to win the coveted Heisman Trophy. At the moment, BetMGM is giving him odds of -1000 to win the award, while Ashton Jeanty sits second with +750.
That is the case despite Boise State winning its game against Wyoming in Week 13 and Colorado falling to Kansas. Arguably, both players had stellar performances. Hunter recorded 125 receiving yards, with two touchdowns in eight receptions. On the other hand, Jeanty ran for 169 yards, with one touchdown in 19 carries.
