"Duke Sucks": Tar Heels analyst digs down to find Bill Belichick's true reason for joining UNC includes his first words growing up
The University of North Carolina appointed Bill Belichick, one of the best football coaches in the country, as their new head coach. The 72-year-old coach agreed to a five-year deal worth $50 million. But what’s driving Belichick’s surprise leap from the NFL to the ACC?
It turns out that the answer might lie in Belichick’s childhood roots. A resurfaced photo of a young Bill at UNC’s Kenan Memorial Stadium from the mid-1950s has gone viral. Bill was born in 1952, while his father, Steve Belichick, coached at Vanderbilt. He spent his early years in Chapel Hill.
His father later joined UNC as the defensive backs coach. According to Tar Heels analyst Taylor Vippolis, the former New England Patriots head coach claimed during his interview that his first words as a child were “Duke Sucks.”
While unverified, the story has fans buzzing about his UNC allegiance. This is no PR stunt from UNC. Belichick’s arrival at North Carolina shows their ambition to dominate football just as it has in basketball. Stay tuned as Belichick returns to the sidelines to write a new chapter in Chapel Hill’s history.

Paul Finebaum predicts success for Bill Belichick
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach will face new challenges in the college football landscape. ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum is confident the NFL legend will thrive, especially in navigating the transfer portal. Speaking on ESPN’s "Get Up," Finebaum praised Belichick’s ability to adapt.
“Recruiting isn’t as crucial as it used to be. The portal is key now, and players will come to Belichick. He can build a powerhouse in no time,” Finebaum said.
He compares Belichick’s situation to that of Deion Sanders. Finebaum highlighted the success through the portal could make UNC a playoff contender within two years. Chancellor Lee H. Roberts was excited over his latest hire, saying:
“Coach Belichick’s legacy speaks for itself. We look forward to this next chapter of Carolina football.”
Belichick’s NFL experience with free agency gives him an edge in managing NIL and player movement. However, he may face unique college constraints like varying school budgets and the absence of collective bargaining.
