Garret Rangel injury update: All we know about Oklahoma State QB’s status ahead of Week 9

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Garrett Rangel suffered a broken collarbone during the 38-35 road loss to the BYU Cougars in Week 8. Per the latest update, the Oklahoma State player will not return for the remainder of the 2024 college football season.

While on his radio show Monday night, coach Mike Gundy revealed the severity of the injury.

Garret Rangel was injured midway through the second quarter as he ran for a 54-yard gain. However, he got tackled by a pair of Cougars defenders and left the game.

"If you get hit from behind going down, especially running, you're in a vulnerable position. That is what happened to him. And we talked about it.
"I talked to him today a litle bit about it, you almost, when you can feel them getting close to you, you're almost better off as a quarterback to slide to the side and not let the 250 pound crunch on your body," Gundy said per 247Sports.

During the radio show, Gundy also said that Garret Rangel will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair the broken collarbone.

He finishes the season going 17-of-33 (51.5%) for 192 yards with two passing touchdowns and one interception. He ran nine times for 91 yards (10.1 yards per attempt).

Who will be the starting quarterback for Oklahoma State after Garret Rangel's injury?

After the loss to the BYU Cougars, it was clear that coach Mike Gundy will have to look for alternate options, especially with Rangel's medical setback.

The most possible replacement for the starting QB position would be the seventh-year senior Alan Bowman.

Bowman has had struggles with consistency and accuracy before being benched for Rangel.

However, the offense will have a veteran presence under center to lead them. He has also posted 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Cowboys offense is going to be explosive in multiple ways now.
