Georgia coach Kirby Smart hits new personal milestone after Texas takedown at Austin in Week 8
No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart has etched his name in history, notching his 100th career victory against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in Austin. This achievement is historic for Smart, who has transformed Georgia into a powerhouse since taking the reins in December 2015.
Smart's journey to 100 wins is a result of his leadership and dedication— having stuck to one team for nine years. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have consistently been elite, with six out of eight seasons yielding at least 11 wins.
Even during the two seasons when it fell short of double-digit victories, Georgia still managed to secure eight wins — a feat many programs would envy.
“These players get the best out of me. I'm so proud of these guys…,” Smart said in his postgame interview.
Achieving this milestone on the road against the top-ranked team makes it even sweeter. Smart joins an elite group of Georgia coaches, becoming only the fourth to reach this mark, alongside legends Vince Dooley, Mark Richt and Wally Butts.
The Bulldogs will continue their quest for SEC dominance in Week 9 when they face the Florida Gators.
Texas win special for Kirby Smart
There’s hardly any matchup where Kirby Smart would have entered as a heavy underdog since taking the job in Georgia. However, the underdog tag paid off big time. Smart was quick to highlight all the skeptics who counted his Bulldogs out:
"Everybody doubted us," Smart said, referencing the barrage of texts he received from friends and colleagues.
The game was anything but straightforward. A bizarre and unprecedented penalty reversal added drama as officials negated a pass interference call against Texas that had wiped out an interception.
Smart got furious over this, getting into a heated exchange with head referee Matt Loeffler, with the coach saying:
"That’s bulls***!"
The penalty reversal swung momentum, allowing Texas to cut a 23-0 deficit to just 23-15. However, that was it. Georgia’s defense regained footing in the fourth quarter.
