"He meant the world to me": Tom Brady "heartbroken" after former Michigan athletic counselor Greg Harden's death

Tom Brady shared an emotional statement following the death of his longtime mentor, Greg Harden, on Friday. Harden was reportedly hospitalised on Monday and died due to complications arising from surgery. The former University of Michigan athletic counselor was instrumental in Brady’s journey from college to becoming a 7-time Super Bowl champion.

Reflecting on their relationship, Brady, who played football at Michigan from 1995 to 1999, wrote:

“I'm so sad to hear the news of Greg's passing,” Brady wrote. “I'm heartbroken as he was a dear friend and mentor. There are so many beautiful qualities Greg had that endeared him to so many people over his years at Michigan.”
“He meant the world to me,” Brady added. “I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love and support he had given me. He will be truly missed.”

Harden was influential to Brady and shaped the lives of elite athletes, including Michael Phelps, Desmond Howard and J.J. McCarthy. A Detroit native, he retired in 2020 after decades of service to Michigan’s athletic department.

Harden also wrote a book, Stay Sane in an Insane World: How to Control the Controllables and Thrive, which was published in August 2023.

Jim Harbaugh and others reflect on the eternal impact of Greg Harden’s guidance

Jim Harbaugh, coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, was deeply connected to Harden throughout his time as a player and coach at Michigan. In his statement, Harbaugh said Greg's “perspective” was one of a kind, and his “wisdom” was unmatched.

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback and former Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy paid his respects with a heartfelt tribute:

"You gave me the courage and belief as we fought hand and hand against the demons that I've spent my entire life fighting," McCarthy wrote [H/t ESPN].
"You have inspired me by your ability to unconditionally love everyone and everything," he added.

Meanwhile, Michigan Wolverines football coach, Sherrone Moore, also expressed his gratitude for Harden’s guidance.

“To me personally, he was more than a friend…” Moore said, [H/t On3]. “He was an incredible human in every way and pushed us all to be great mentally.”
“I loved him dearly and would not be in this position today without his guidance,” he said. “He will be missed dearly.”
