Is Will Johnson playing today? Exploring Michigan CB's availability for Week 9
The Michigan Wolverines are fighting to keep their season alive as the team is currently 4-3 (2-2 Big Ten) and are on a two-game losing streak.
Their star cornerback junior Will Johnson has been banged up throughout the 2024 season and is currently questionable to play in today's game against the Michigan State Spartans.
Losing Johnson would be a massive blow to an already depleted Wolverines secondary. He has 14 total tackles (12 solo, two assisted) with three pass deflections and a pair of interceptions that were both returned for touchdowns.
Despite the injury-plagued season, Johnson is still one of the most feared secondary players in the entire nation.
Let's take a closer look at what the status is of cornerback Will Johnson for this Week 9 matchup against the Michigan State Spartans.
Is Will Johnson playing today?
Will Johnson is not expected to be playing in today's Week 9 in-state rivalry game against the Michigan State Spartans, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and 247Sports. This is a massive loss for the Wolverines as Johnson is one of the best defensive players in the country.
The opposing offense gameplans differently with Johnson off the field as their number-one wide receiver is no longer going to be blanketed by the top corner in the nation.
Will Johnson has been dealing with the injury bug throughout the 2024 college football season. He was limited last week against the Illinois Fighting Illini as he left in the first quarter with a lower-body injury.
During the week, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore provided some update on Johnson's ability.
"I think right now, if I was a doctor - and I'm not a doctor - I'd put him as questionable. We'll see how he rolls this week." h/t On3
Unfortunately for the Michigan Wolverines, Johnson did not 'roll' the right way this week and will miss the game. Moore and the rest of the Michigan Wolverines team is hoping that they will not need him in this game.
They would want him playing at 100 percent for next week's massive matchup at home against the Oregon Ducks.
