Isaiah Hazel death: What happened to Charlotte 49ers DB? Looking at tragic Maryland car accident
More details have emerged about Isaiah Hazel's death and the car accident that claimed his life. Along with Hazel, the accident also led to the deaths of Vikings cornerback Khyree Jackson and former Florida State and Penn State cornerback AJ Lytton.
Isaiah Hazel was a five-year defensive back for the Maryland Terrapins and Charlotte 49ers. He spent the first four seasons of his collegiate career in Maryland before transferring ahead of the 2023 college football season.
Last season, he finished with a career-high 45 total tackles (17 solo, 28 assisted) but did not record a single statistic outside of that. The 6-foot-1 defensive back was born in Largo, Maryland.
What caused Isaiah Hazel's death?
Kevin Seifert of ESPN posted the Maryland State Police news release surrounding the crash that killed AJ Lytton, Khyree Jackson and Isaiah Hazel.
The crash involved three cars, the one carrying the three men in a Dodge Charger, one with the other driver, who was identified as Cori Clingman in an Infiniti, and an Impala. Below is what the preliminary investigation concluded.
"The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the silver Infiniti, later identified as Cori Clingman, was traveling northbound on Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue in Prince George's County.
"Investigators believe Clingman attempted to change lanes while driving at a high rate of speed when she struck the Dodger Charger and then struck the Chevrolet Impala. The Charger subsequently traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck multiple tree stumps where the vehicle came to rest."
The people in the other two vehicles were not injured. Investigators believe that alcohol could have been a factor in the crash itself, but will have to wait for the results to become public as the charges are pending.
Isaiah Hazel's death had him in the driver's seat when the crash occurred. Both Khyree Jackson and Hazel were pronounced dead at the scene while AJ Lytton would be later pronounced deceased by hospital personnel.
