"It’s unethical as hell": Kirk Herbstreit calls out Oklahoma for poor game spirit over Da’Jon Terry injury stoppage
Kirk Herbstreit wasn’t having any of it when Oklahoma’s questionable tactics halted Tennessee’s offense on Saturday night. The incident occurred during the Volunteers’ fast-paced drive, during which a 38-yard pass from Nico Iamaleava to Bru McCoy set up a first-and-goal.
But before Tennessee could capitalize, Oklahoma defensive tackle Da’Jon Terry went down with an injury scare, briefly stopping the game. Terry eventually walked off the field with the help of trainers. The Sooners held Tennessee to a field goal shortly after the stoppage for a 3-0 lead.
The timing of Terry's injury drew suspicion, and Herbstreit went ballistic.
"This is college football. It drives me crazy. You look over after a big play and all of a sudden, he looks over and goes down. It’s not necessarily against the rules, but it’s unethical as hell,” the commentator said on air.
“You see it all over against these tempo offenses, guys just go down with an ‘injury,'” he continued.
Tennessee trumped Oklahoma in Week 4 matchup
The No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers secured a crucial Week 4 victory over the No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners in the SEC. They beat former head coach Josh Heupel’s alma mater 25-15 in a game where both offenses struggled early.
However, Tennessee's defense shone, forcing multiple turnovers, including a critical interception by Jermod McCoy in the first half.
This was Nico Iamaleava’s first road game, but he failed to capitalize. He gave a mixed performance, fumbling twice but also connecting with Dont’e Thornton for a 66-yard touchdown that got the Tennessee fans going in Norman.
Oklahoma’s defense limited running back Dylan Sampson, but DeSean Bishop stepped up with key carries to keep the Vols' ground game rolling. As said earlier, Heupel’s defense was the real star, extending its streak to 19 quarters without allowing a touchdown before Oklahoma finally broke through late.
However, their efforts kept the Sooners at bay, securing the win despite a conservative second-half approach. Tennessee is heading into its open week, preparing for its road game against the Arkansas Razorbacks the week after.
