Jack Tuttle injury: What happened to the Michigan QB during offseason?
As Michigan experiences a major Week 2 QB battle, one of its top choices is unavailable due to injury. Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle has yet to take his first snaps of 2024 due to a lingering off-season injury. With the struggles of Davis Warren, Tuttle's availability is a significant topic moving forward. Here's the story.
Jack Tuttle Injury: What Happened to Michigan QB?
The Michigan quarterback was a backup on the 2023 title team but has yet to see action in 2024. Tuttle was ruled out during Week 1 and upgraded to questionable in Week 2. Unfortunately, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore has been less than forthcoming about the issues Tuttle is facing.
"He's just working through some things," said Moore. "He'll be back throwing here even more and be in a good place. So we'll see when he gets back."
Sports Illustrated's Matt Lounsberry reported that Tuttle is battling a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an elbow injury he experienced last season.
More on Jack Tuttle's history
Tuttle was among the most highly regarded quarterback recruits in the 2018 class when he chose Indiana. However, Tuttle has played only sparingly as a Hoosier. Over four seasons, he has passed for 901 yards and five touchdowns against six interceptions. Much of Tuttle's IU career was spent sitting behind Michael Penix.
Tuttle transferred to UM ahead of the 2023 season. While playing some late-game snaps in relief of JJ McCarthy, Tuttle was 15 for 17 passing for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Tuttle's status moving forward
Michigan faced a difficult QB battle to replace McCarthy, as none of the candidates could match his experience or production. Former walk-on Davis Warren ultimately won the starting job, but after two subpar performances, it's fair to wonder how long Warren will be the starting QB.
Alex Orji was presumed to contend for the starting job. The mobile quarterback has shown skill as a runner—26 rushes for 155 yards and three touchdowns—but has attempted just three passes.
Michigan appreciates Orji's athleticism and likes him as a Wildcat or goal-line QB. But he isn't a serious option for the full-time starting job. When and if Tuttle is healthy, he'll likely see significant snaps as the Wolverine QB.
