Jacksonville State Gamecocks starting QB for Week 7: Who is Rich Rodriguez's QB1 for game against New Mexico State Aggies?
Coach Rich Rodriguez's Jacksonville State Gamecocks will host conference foes New Mexico State Aggies in their backyard on Wednesday in Burgess-Snow Field at AmFirst Stadium in Jacksonville, Alabama. This will only be the second faceoff between these two teams in their history. Last year, NMSU emerged as the winner in a 20-17 game.
Tyler Huff has started all five games for the Gamecocks, leading the team to a 2-3 record. They lost their first three games before rebounding with two straight wins, the latest coming last week against the Kennesaw State Owls.
Will Tyler Huff continue to start for Jacksonville State in Week 7?
With a short week to rest, Tyler Huff isn't carrying any niggles. He is expected to start and take the majority of snaps for the Gamecocks.
In last week's 63-24 win against the Owls, Rich Rodriguez seemed impressed with his quarterback.
“I thought Tyler Huff was fantastic,” Rodriguez said, via Calhoun Journal. "That guy is a warrior."
He also pointed out some mistakes but said his team remained steadfast and calm.
“We made some critical errors in the second quarter that allowed them to come back into the game and got their fans into it, but there was no panic at halftime,” Rodriquez said after the game.
“We just had to relax a little bit. I thought the key was coming out in the second half and getting some drives again. I just noticed we had 31 first downs, and when you get 31 first downs, you’re usually controlling the tempo.”
Tyler Huff's performance in the first five games of the 2024 season
In Week 1's 55-27 loss to Coastal Carolina, Tyler Huff was sacked only once as his offensive line gave him ample amount of time to make air raids. Despite that, he threw for 173 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on 7 of 14 pass attempts. He also rushed for 11 yards on five carries.
The following game, in a blowout 49-14 loss against the No. 22 Louisville Cardinals, Huff showed his dual threat ability as he threw for 160 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while also adding 101 rushing yards, non-18 carries, and a score.
In Week 3's 37-34 overtime loss against Eastern Michigan, Tyler Huff passed for 311 yards and two touchdowns on 24 of 34 attempts. He rushed for 80 yards on 14 carries.
In Week 4, Huff registered his first win, a 44-7 domination over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, where he threw for 236 yards, one touchdown and one interception. On the ground, he ran 77 yards on 11 carries and recorded one score.
Last week, in a 63-24 win against the Owls, the dual threat quarterback had 193 yards on 16 of 25 attempts while adding three rushing touchdowns (176 yards on 15 carries).
Rich Rodriguez expects Tyler Huff to land a blowout win against the NM State Aggies.
