Jayden Gibson injury: Oklahoma WR out for 2024 season after preseason setback
With the upcoming college football season approaching, more players are getting injured. Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Jayden Gibson is the newest player to see his season end before it begins.
After Tuesday's practice, coach Brent Venables confirmed the report that Gibson will be out for the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury.
"We've got one player that won't be back, and that's Jayden Gibson, but everybody else, the normal bumps and bruises," Venables told the media (h/t Sports Illustrated).
Gibson was expected to step up in his junior season because of 14 receptions for 375 yards (26.8 yards per catch) with five receiving touchdowns last season. He played in all 13 games last year but will not be one of the top wide receivers for the upcoming season.
How will the Oklahoma Sooners play this season without Jayden Gibson available?
The Oklahoma Sooners ranked 16th in the country, per the Preseason AP Poll, and look to make some legitimate noise in the Southeastern Conference. They have a rough schedule ahead of them. They have six games against the top 15 teams (vs. Tennessee, vs. Texas, at Ole Miss, at Missouri, vs. Alabama & at LSU).
The team has a new starting quarterback in Jackson Arnold who is taking over after Dillon Gabriel transferred to the Oregon Ducks ahead of the season. Arnold did a decent job last year, going 44-for-69 (63.8%) for 563 yards with four touchdowns to three interceptions. With Arnold without wide receiver Gibson, there will be a need to replace his production for the season.
Do not expect too many victories from the Oklahoma Sooners as they will be going through a transitional period in the upcoming season. After a dominant 10-3 season in 2023, it will be surprising if the Sooners are among the AP Poll Top 25 teams throughout the upcoming season.
