Here's a closer look at five potential landing spots for John Mateer via the transfer portal.
5 potential John Mateer landing spots
#1. Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners will likely be in the market for a quarterback after Jackson Arnold entered the transfer portal. Meanwhile, they recently hired former Washington State Cougars offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle in the same role. They could look to get Mateer to follow him to Norman.
#2. Michigan Wolverines
The Michigan Wolverines were able to flip the commitment of Bryce Underwood, however, they are still expected to spend big money to add a bridge quarterback via the transfer portal. John Mateer reportedly received a $1 million NIL offer from a school and many believe the 2023 national champions could make a play for him this offseason.
#3. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Alabama Crimson Tide will likely be in the market for a quarterback via the transfer portal as Jalen Milroe is projected to be selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. They could provide Mateer with an opportunity to play in the SEC while joining one of the most prestigious programs in the sport.
#4. USC Trojans
The USC Trojans were among the biggest disappointments in the 2024 college football season. Head coach Lincoln Riley has already revealed that he will look to land a quarterback via the transfer portal. He has coached three Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks in eight seasons and has shown an ability to get the most out of the position, which could entice John Mateer.
#5. Miami (FL) Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes could be in the market for a quarterback as Cam Ward is projected to be a top-five pick in the 2025 NFL draft. They could turn to John Mateer with the hope of striking gold with former Washington State Cougars quarterbacks in back-to-back seasons.
