Kalen DeBoer highlights Ryan Williams' traits apart from on-field skillset that make him "special"

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer highlighted freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams' traits apart from his on-field skills during the recent DraftKings episode of "GoJo and Golic."

Williams played a crucial role in Alabama’s thrilling Week 5 41-33 win against the Georgia Bulldogs, scoring the game-winning 75-yard touchdown in just 13 seconds.

DeBoer lauded Williams not only for his "plays on the field" but also praised his stromg personality:

“It’s a special person that, no.1 - who make those plays on the field but a special person that can handle, what it takes every day to continue to bring your best,” DeBoer said. “I think our team really saw in him the maturity he has ... his commitment and his sacrifice to doing what he is doing, he is just lined up from Day 1.” [Timestamp - 1:05:48]

Williams, who made headlines last year by graduating early from Saraland High School and reclassifying to join Alabama in 2024, reflected on his decision.

"Definitely dominating at the high school level," Williams said [H/t Bleacher Report]. "Me and my family took careful consideration after my sophomore football season, and we decided it was a decision we wanted to make...”
“I always want to be team first,” he said. “Once the season was complete, it was time. Today's the day."

At 17 years old, Williams' game-winning play is just the start of what could be a standout career at Alabama.

Alabama freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams is already making waves as the Crimson Tide’s breakout star of 2024. At only 17 years old, the Saraland, Alabama native has shown promise of living up to his five-star high school hype. Ranked as the third-best wide receiver in the 2024 class, Williams earned the nickname "Hollywood" for his electric athleticism.

In just two games following Alabama's season opener, Williams showcased his potential. He racked up eight receptions, over 140 yards, and scored two touchdowns in dominant wins against USF and Wisconsin.

His journey took a brief detour after head coach Nick Saban retired in January 2024, leading Williams to de-commit and explore Texas A&M as an alternative. However, he ultimately chose to return to Kalen DeBBoer’s Alabama, recommitting to the Tide two weeks later.
